H.A. COLLEGE STUDENTS CELEBRATE ‘DAYS’ MAKING A DIFFERENCE

The celebration of days in colleges may have been prescribed and controlled by the vice chancellor. However, for the students of H.A. College of Commerce, it was a time of sharing joy and bringing smiles. Not really interested in the various ‘dressing up’ days that have been the rage in other colleges, the students of this college went out of their way to make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate by spending quality time with the inmates of VS Hospital, the Mother Teresa orphanage, the home for the destitute, an Old Age home on Ashram Road and the children in the municipality school at Ambawadi. The College collected about fifteen thousand rupees from the staff and students, and bought various gifts and eatables for the people in these institutions. They went to visit these places, one on each day, for six days, thus making their “cultural festival” a more meaningful one by singing and dancing not on a huge stage, but with these lonely or less privileged persons.

Traditional day, executive day, tree plantation day and autograph day were celebrated in the college, but their focus was to create an awareness of the social responsibility that each student should have. In fact, the students also had a nimbu pani day, wherein they brought home-made lime juice and sold it for two rupees a glass so as to collect funds for the visits to the hospital, the homes and the school.

One of the students, Eesha Mehta, said at the end of these “days”, “I wish we could do this for some more days! The happiness that we got from these visits is so much more than the happiness we get from dressing up for days.” Another student, Jay, said “We never knew this side of masti. We realized during these visits that there could be another way to have masti, and that is by singing and dancing with those who are lonely or bringing a smile to the face of a unlucky child.” The Principal, Dr. Ashwin Purohit, and many of the staff members felt that this kind of sentiment and awareness in the teenagers and youth of the country is what will bring about social upliftment.

Blood donation: A blood donation camp was organized in the college in collaboration with  the Red-Cross Society. Nearly 57 students and few teachers of the college donated blood. Our students were motivated by the teachers for donating blood with a conscious cause of “Life gives Life”. It is the best practice which is followed over last so many years in the college. It was held in the Room No 1 of the college. The students who donated blood were given calculators as a token of appreciation.  They were also offered glucose biscuits & fruits. Prof H.B.Chaudhary successfully carried out the camp under the able guidance of Respected Principal.
